About York
York is an historical walled city in North Yorkshire that was founded as a Roman provincial capital (Eboracum) in 71AD. With its city walls and amazing historic architecture it attracts visitors from all over the world.
York attracts visitors just for it's shopping. There is an extraordinary choice of specialist shops. The city centre streets are pedestrianised so that you can walk freely and safely. It is very compact and quite easy to find your way around.
Goodramgate is one of the oldest streets in York and the houses remaining here date back to the 14th century.
Tesserae is situated very close to York Minster which dominates the city. It is the largest gothic church north of the Alps. The famous Rose Window badly damaged by fire in 1984 has now been restored. Also close to Monk Bar, this is over 20 metres high, the tallest of the cities defences. Of all the bars it has the last remaining working wooden portcullis.
With its crooked streets, ginnels and winding passageways, gift shops and galleries, York has much to offer the weekend visitor.
